Sangyon JOO has long explored how we perceive and exist in the world, as well as how images mediate our understanding of reality. With a background in photography and media from Seoul and San Francisco, she critically examines the complex relationship between nature, perception, and memory through exhibitions, publications, and public projects. Her practice revolves around two central axes: the contemplation of existence and the circulation of images. Through photography, she has closely observed the cracks, boundaries, and invisible layers of the visible world.
In her 2023 series Other Ways of Being, presented in this exhibition, she deconstructs and reconstructs the relationship between subject and image, presence and absence. Her work expands photography beyond mere documentation into a space of nonlinear narratives and constant reinterpretation, inviting viewers to reflect on the hidden dimensions that lie beneath the surface of reality.
