Shinwook KIM

South Korean, born in 1982, works in Seoul

Shinwook KIM explores the boundaries where nature and traces of human presence intersect. His encounters with native freshwater fish have evolved into an artistic practice that reflects both personal experience and ecological concerns, leading to a contemporary reinterpretation of Eohaedo, a traditional Korean fish painting.

The work presented here, part of his ongoing series Eohaedo (2006–), depicts the shifting ecology of the Geumho and Nakdong Rivers, printed on ottji, a traditional Korean lacquered paper. Once heavily polluted, the Geumho River has undergone restoration but remains ecologically unstable due to the spread of invasive species and large predatory fish. Through this work, KIM invites reflection on the fragile relationship between humanity and nature, and the ethical connections that bind all living beings to their environment.
